Nigeria – Renunciation of Citizenship

This page contains information on how to renounce your citizenship in Nigeria. A citizen of Nigeria, who is of full age and intends to renounce his Nigerian citizenship, shall make a renunciation declaration to the Nigerian authorities. The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall cause such a renunciation declaration to be registered and such Applicant shall cease to be a Nigerian citizen subject to such declaration not been contrary to public policy, or Nigeria not being physically involved in war.

You are granted citizenship of another country which does not allow dual nationality, therefore, you must renounce your Nigerian citizenship. You will cease to be a Nigerian citizen once the declaration is registered. Note If you are under 17 years when your parents renounce their Nigerian citizenship, you will also lose your citizenship unless the other parent remains a Nigerian citizen.

The Ministry may ask for additional documents to be submitted. All copies of supporting documents should be made on A4 paper

Fees: The service is costing $800.

Acquisition of citizenship in another country would permit a Nigerian national to renounce his Nigerian Citizenship.

Once an application is submitted along with all the required documents and the Ministry has approved the petition of the applicant to renounce his Nigerian citizenship, he/she will received a renunciation certificate.

Visit the concerned authority personally.

Fill the application form with the complete information.(this can be obtained in the Embassy of Nigeria nearest to you). It must be signed and certified before a magistrate, Justice of Peace, solicitor, notary public or commissioner for oaths.

Submit the 2 application forms and the necessary documents.

Pay the prescribed fee.
